“Our left brain can go into a relaxed state when there is organization and structure and systems and clarity.” – Laura Hollick of Soul Art studio

Laura Hollick shared one of her secrets to calm her judging mind during her Right-Brainers in Business Video Summit interview. The simple act of cleaning something, even if it’s a drawer or just one shelf in the fridge, can help put your left-brain at ease so you can focus on creating. So take a few minutes to clear the clutter and make room for your creativity to flow.

Acknowledge your accomplishments.

If you’re like me, sometimes your judging mind can get on your case about all the things you haven’t done yet. It can beat you up about your never-ending to-do list. Rather than let that negative self-talk sap your energy, find a way to acknowledge what you have completed.

At the end of each day, list out at least 3 things big or small that you got done. You are probably accomplishing more than you are giving yourself credit for.

Stop comparing yourself to your competition.

Sure it helps to know what your “competition” is up to. However, if you constantly compare yourself and let your inner critic tell you all the reasons why you’re not as good as everyone else, you’re only going to shut  yourself down.

Instead, think of your best “competitors” as your peers or even virtual mentors who you get to learn from.

Shout, shout, let it all out.

If spreadsheets and numbers make you want to scream, then by all means, scream! Find a private place to shout into a pillow. Yell and shake your fists. Rather than keeping the frustration pent up inside, let the feelings flow through you until they dissipate.

It’s quite cathartic. And, yes, I’m speaking from personal experience here.

Get the word out.

Is your analytical mind telling you that you can’t move a marketing muscle until you know exactly what to say? Relax. The more you practice articulating what you do, the clearer and easier the marketing will become.

Don’t let that negative thinking get you down.

Your inner critic is simply doing its job to maintain the status quo. You, the entrepreneur, on the other hand, are constantly pushing the envelope as you expand your business, so expect to hear a lot of resistance from your inner critic.

To combat this nasty saboteur, remind yourself that doubt and fear are a natural part of the growth process, acknowledge that it’s your inner critic talking and not you, thank your inner critic for its concern, and choose instead to focus on what you’re doing well. (And hey why not revisit your “Kudos and Feel Good” folder while you’re at it?)

It’s normal to feel excited but also scared, overwhelmed, or confused by your big vision.

If you find yourself worrying about how you’re going to accomplish your big vision or when you’ll ever have a crystal-clear picture, just notice that your left brain may be on overdrive, wanting everything to be ironed out pronto. Take a deep breath and trust that, as you take small steps forward, your vision will unfold.
