Business Plan Spotlight

What is your business and what makes your business unique?

As a development editor, I help authors transform their ideas from spark to printed page. I take on clients directly and work through a publisher. Helping authors bring their books to life is often as rewarding for me as for them.

As a blogger and author, my goal is to entertain and inspire readers to find the magic in the mundane. I’ve transitioned from writing how-to books about technology to writing about topics that are closer to my heart: my life in Italy as an olive farmer, hobby beekeeper, yogini, and meditator. On my blog, I share tips about cooking and farming along with observations about life. The memoir I’m writing recounts my story of finding home and my place in the world during a two year period of building a house in southern Italy.

My superpower: organization. I can see how pieces fit together to form the big picture.

How has the Right-Brain Business Plan® helped you? What is different for you and your business after approaching planning in a creative, visual way?

The Right-Brain Business Plan helped me think of myself as a business rather than simply an author looking for the next writing gig. It provided the motivation and accountability to take the time to think about what I had to offer and how I wanted to bring it into the world. Week by week, the RBBP exercises guided me to identify my values and understand how they apply to what I do, brought focus to my business, and helped me create specific goals. Before RBBP, my goals and plans were mental and ephemeral, whereas tapping into the visual part of my brain helped clarify the why, for whom, how, and when and put it into physical form. As a writer, any ideas and plans I had jotted down were word-based; having a visual image to refer to provides an instant reminder and checkpoint of what I want to offer.

write_your_life_collage_for_jenn_lee

What goals (big or small) on your business plan have you already accomplished or have made progress on?

The RBBP helped me understand the importance of not trying to do everything on my own and a medium-sized goal was to look for help. I invested in an online memoir writing workshop to begin a writing project that had been dawdling in a desk drawer, and when the writing workshop ended I decided to continue working with the book coach/editor so that I can finish the rough draft by the end of December 2016.

I created a public Facebook page for my writing. I’m making progress on my social media presence and am starting to be more public about my ongoing work, whereas before RBBP I was tight-lipped until I had a finished product.

I’ve developed an editorial calendar for my blog for the second half of 2016 so I don’t have to come up with ideas every month.

How do you use your creative intuition in your work?

A lot of my work is about listening and observing. When working with clients, I use my creative intuition to hear the things they aren’t saying, to listen to the subtext, and then ask them about what I’ve intuited. Difficult questions asked with a soft tone can usually get them to open up and dig deeper, which always makes for a better story.

As an author, I have to write whether I’m inspired that day or not. Before I begin to write, I stop for a moment, take a deep breath, listen, then begin.

Is there anything you’d like to share about your Right-Brain Business Plan® in terms of what it’s made out of or how you made it?

My Right-Brain Business Plan is the classic RBBP accordion book that I made from poster board and then pasted the images that I’d collected to make a vision board. While I did the exercises each week, I didn’t make the vision board when it was assigned at the beginning of the course but toward the end and that worked out well for me because my ideas were clearer. I chose images and words that spoke to me and loved how the board came together organically. It follows a sequence that I’d like my business to follow: it begins with the book I’m writing, flows to the topics I write about and the ideal reader, and ends with a future, big vision component: hosting a writer’s retreat on my farm.

poetry_vision_for_jennlee

What’s your big vision for your business?

My big vision is to host writer retreats on my farm in Italy where ‘ve found inspiration and a tranquil workspace and would like to share it with other writers and artists for short, organized group retreats or longer, individual sojourns.

What advice do you have for other creative entrepreneurs?

Take the time in the beginning to think about your values, goals, your ideal customer, and what you can offer and go forward with clarity.

There’s a lot of talk about starting, not procrastinating, not getting hung up on perfection and I agree, however, some ideas need to percolate or mature before they’re ready to be launched and that’s okay.

Find a like-minded cohort or community to share your ideas, fears, successes, and doubts. The more you share your work and progress, the more it becomes real.

Jenn's 5 RBBPs from 2007-2015

With 2015 in full swing, it’s a great time to clarify your vision and goals for the year. One of my favorite practices is to revisit my Right-Brain Business Plan®. While I don’t make one every year (because it usually takes some time for my dreams to manifest), it does seem like every other year is the sweet spot for me. And I was due for one this year. I’ve been using this method since I made my first RBBP in 2007 and have since built my multi-6 figure business based on this right-brain approach.

If you want to make your own, you can join is in the Right-Brain Business Plan® Home Study.

Here are some highlights of the goals I’ve reached from these past RBBPs…

From 2007 RBBP: doubled my income, achieved target number of coaching clients, led workshops, created products, made TV appearances, hired a bookkeeper, got my yoga teacher certification

From 2009 RBBP: landed my first book deal, set up an integrated e-commerce and e-mail management system, led first of many RBBP e-courses, hired first VA, got my Expressive Arts Intuitive Painting teacher certification

From 2011 RBBP: launched first book The Right-Brain Business Plan, led first Right-Brainers in Business Video Summit, launched my RBBP Kit, launched Right-Brain Business Plan® licensing program, launched Unfolding Your Life Vision® licensing program, launched my Mentorship Program in 2012, hit 6-figures

From 2013 RBBP: Hit multiple-6 figures, landed book deal for second book Building Your Business the Right-Brain Way, was one of the first business teachers on Creative Live, spoke at Emerging Women where I shared the stage with the likes of Elizabeth Gilbert, Brene Brown, and Alanis Morrissette, grew my RBBP community and team, moved to a new house and focused more on home, started to explore RBBP licensing program for non-profits, launched second book, redesigned my websites, brought on Associate Coaches, expanded Mentorship Program to include in-person Shooting Star level and led retreat at my home, launched the Product Development Playground e-Course

2015 and beyond RBBP: My latest RBBP focuses on a continuing theme of health, home, and happiness so that the success of my business helps to nourish my personal life even more. I want to simplify and streamline our infrastructure so we can embrace more ease. And that in turn will help my team and I better serve our growing community and also focus on being more strategic. I want us to do more with less and still rock it out! I’ve also been dreaming of having a studio space where I can do my big intuitive paintings, host in-person mastermind retreats, and invite other awesome teachers to lead creative workshops. I know it would feed my inner muse and I like that it brings more of a face-to-face, local touch to our virtual world. Not sure if it will happen this year but I’m holding the intention lightly. Most of all, I want to have fun, spaciousness, and to keep making a positive impact on our family of RBBPers.

We’d love to have you join our RBBP family with our flagship course that will help you kick-off the year with a plan that makes your heart sing!

How has the Right-Brain Business Plan® helped you? What is different for you and your business after approaching planning in a creative, visual way?

The RBBP course has given me the tools to create a strong and grounded foundation in my business. I am clear about who I am serving and how I am serving them. The entrepreneurial ecosystem was particularly helpful in seeing the bigger picture of my business. I’ve been able to create a successful and authentic offering for the world and the support from Jenn and the cohort circle have been invaluable in helping me to do so. I’ve begun to earn an income and women are joining my programs. I’ve appreciated the feedback and encouragement that I’ve received while being a part of the RBBP cohort circle. I absolutely love creating collages as a part of my RBBP and I use these collages as “logos” for my offerings.

write_your_life_collage_for_jenn_lee

What goals (big or small) on your business plan have you already accomplished or have made progress on?

>>> “Women Who Write Rock” pilot program was launched in which 140 women participated. About ten percent of these women signed up for the next round of the program. Because the program has huge impact on the lives of many women, it is now running as a monthly membership. I feel good knowing that women are wanting to join this program and that I can serve them in this way.

>>> “Write Your Life”, a memoir writing mentoring program has also been created. The pilot program of this begins in June.

>>> “Love Poems” was also published.

>>> I’m making progress on collaborating with others and desire to collaborate more with people who have a similar mission.

How do you use your creative intuition in your work?

I use my creative intuition in my work when I’m writing love letters to my followers, writing poetry, or creating a new offering. It’s important to me to have plenty of self-care time and reflective time through dance, yoga, nature, writing and bodywork so that I am able to tap into my creative side, and give to others from a space of fullness. When I am well-tended to, I can better support my clients.

women_who_write_rock_vision_board_for_jenn_lee

What’s your big vision for your business?

My big vision is for every woman on earth to live her brilliance and to support any woman who is called to the work that i offer.

This is a poem I wrote about the women I serve:

What I Believe About You
*
You are a woman of great strength and courage.
You have the ability to express yourself. It may or may not need prodding. But it’s there.
You have a right to be heard, your voice booming out to the world, for all to witness.
You have a unique story to tell. All women do.
Your presence on the earth is magnificent, and we need you. We need your unique contribution.
Your life is filled with challenge and heartache, but it’s for a purpose. To serve your soul.
Your inner creatrix yearns to be free, to express, to just be, without judgement.

What advice do you have for other creative entrepreneurs?

Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you. All the other tangible rewards will come as a result.

Through creating my RBBP, I’ve realized that I am my own perfect customer. I have traveled (and am traveling) the road of self-discovery. My desire is to see every women on our planet in love with herself. Fully healed. Fully embodied. Living ecstatic and vibrant lives. Writing with the intention of self-discovery is one pathway to creating the lives of our dreams. I’m doing it and so can you.

Note from Jenn:Pretty much every year since 2009, I get a note from Lauren Brownstein with fun pics of her latest RBBP. And they always bring a smile to my face. Since my first little e-book came out Lauren’s been using this process for her annual goal-setting. I just love how committed she is to the RBBP approach, how creative she gets each time, and that she is so passionate about helping others. Go, Lauren! Plus, I’m grateful that I to got to finally meet her in person a few years ago when I led a dream box workshop in D.C. at Kimberly Wilson’s place. Read on to get inspired and to see links to some of Lauren’s past RBBPs (one of which is featured in my first book).

Business Plan Spotlight

What is your business and what makes your business unique?

As a philanthropy consultant, I help nonprofits raise funds more effectively, and I help make matches between donors and great causes.

I provide nonprofits with top-notch fundraising services (focused on grant writing and related activities) that let the nonprofits focus on their mission-driven work. At the same time, by helping my nonprofit clients clarify their thinking about their goals and implementation plans, I help them work smarter, deeper, and better.

I also work with individual donors and with groups of donors ensure that they are giving in a way that reflects their interests, passions, and values. Ultimately, I want to make philanthropy part of our everyday conversation, and I want everyone to feel like a philanthropist, whether they are giving $50, $500, or $50,000.

What sets me apart? I infuse my work, and work products, with a sense of creativity and FUN!

img_2335

How has the Right-Brain Business Plan® helped you? What is different for you and your business after approaching planning in a creative, visual way?

The RBBP has guided me towards asking myself some questions about my business that I would not otherwise ask. The creative approach has made business planning something I look forward to! It has refreshed my thinking and sparked new ideas and insights.

img_2336

What goals (big or small) on your business plan have you already accomplished or have made progress on?

This quarter, I’m working on growing my client base and further establishing my thought leadership in my field. Ramping up my networking activities and my social media presence are some of the goals I’ve articulated in my RBBP, and I’m making progress!

How do you use your creative intuition in your work?

As a grant writer, creativity is absolutely CRITICAL! If a foundation’s program officer is comparing a stack of 25 grant proposals, how can I make mine stand out from the pack, while still adhering to the strict structural guidelines that many foundation’s require? I do it by telling the organization’s story in a compelling, memorable, creative way. Fresh language, unexpected narratives, and personal stories of lives that have been changed through the nonprofit’s work all can help the reader to remember my proposal and my organization.

I’ve created a product called Grant Writing for Creative Souls that blends grant writing tips, creative writing exercises, and fun music to unleash grant writers’ creative flow. It’s a great example of my creative approach to my work. http://www.pitchconsulting.com/PITCH_LLC/Tips_and_Resources.html

img_2337

Is there anything you’d like to share about your Right-Brain Business Plan® in terms of what it’s made out of or how you made it?

Creating a RBBP has become an annual tradition for me. I’ve made accordion books, mobiles, and more. This year, I wanted to do something more modular, where I’d be able to add in new info and ideas, update old info, remove stuff as needed, etc. as the year went on.

I found this little mini file folder for index cards, and I combined that with my love of lettering to create a series of cards that address many of the questions in the RBBP book. I’m putting my specific action list for each quarter on the back side of the translucent file folder, so I can easily see it. The front side of the file folder has a pocket on it, so I decided to use that for a mini-collage that expresses my major goals for each quarter (growing my client base and establishing my thought leadership in my field).

What’s your big vision for your business?

Nonprofits work more effectively.

People are educated, housed, fed, inspired, etc. due, in part, to my work with nonprofits.

I help other fundraisers to do their jobs better.

I inspire people to live generously.

What advice do you have for other creative entrepreneurs?

Take breaks a few times per year to review your goals and vision.

Find a support team of other entrepreneurs who can be your sounding boards, critics, and cheerleaders.

Don’t be afraid to try new things and fail.

Ask for more money – if nobody ever turns you down, you’re not charging enough.

Invest in a good computer, a good accountant, and good health insurance. You need and deserve it.

If things feel “rote,” take a break and shake things up. Go to a museum. Listen to new music. Doodle. Just do something to get your creative mojo back!

Name
: Nevada McPherson
Company Name: Noisy Muse
Website: www.nevada-mcpherson.squarespace.com/

Note from Jenn: Note from Jenn: When I spoke at the Emerging Women Live conference in Boulder last fall, I had the pleasure of meeting this gentle creative soul, Nevada McPherson. I was so delighted when she came and introduced herself and let me know how the RBBP has helped her. How cool that she has created her own graphic novel! Read on to find out more about this lovely artist and her creative business.

Business Plan Spotlight

What is your business and what makes your business unique?

My business is telling stories, whether through my screenplays, hand-illustrated graphic novels, or my handmade crafts. My graphic novels and craft items are unique in that they are visual representations of my voice in whatever quirky shape that takes, and so I formed Noisy Muse as a way to bring my books and other visual arts together. Also, my rescue Chihuahua, Mitzi, is a muse for me and is usually with me when I’m working. Sometimes she can be noisy, but mostly she reminds me to have fun and be myself.

nevada-rbbp

How has the Right-Brain Business Plan® helped you? What is different for you and your business after approaching planning in a creative, visual way?

I named my business Noisy Muse because I have several creative interests. The RBBP has helped me to focus on each of my offerings so that I’m not overwhelmed by left brain details but can handle them in an effective way that works for me as a right-brainer. I’ve been writing, drawing and creating art for years but it was the RBBP that finally helped me to see how my overall style and vision could become integrated and work as a business. I have gone through the parts of the RBBP once for my graphic novels and again for my crafts and now I am able to tailor my marketing and getting-the-word-out goals for my perfect customers in each area. Also, I’ve learned the importance of setting SMART goals, which are helping me to stay focused and to move past the places where I used to get stuck.

nevada-rbbp

What goals (big or small) on your business plan have you already accomplished or have made progress on?

I still have several goals that I’m working toward, but one I’m proud to say I’ve accomplished is that I’ve started my business rolling and am learning day by day how to play big. As a true introvert, it’s not always easy for me to put myself out there but I’m learning how to do that and find that the more actions I take to move forward, the more I want to take. I’ve published one graphic novel and am about to publish another, and I’ve opened up a shop called Noisy Muse on Etsy. One of my screenplays recently placed in the Austin Film Festival Screenwriting Competition. Thanks to Jenn’s advice from the RBBP book I’m learning to reach out more for help and feedback, and I’m looking forward to collaborating with other creative entrepreneurs, forming strategic alliances, and becoming more involved in a larger creative community.

How do you use your creative intuition in your work?

When I find myself overthinking how to accomplish a goal or solve a problem, I step back and try to get a fresh perspective on what’s going right and how I can amplify the positive and minimize the negative. Getting back to the nuts and bolts of the work itself and finding a way to make it better are places where I use my creative intuition to bring clarity where there was confusion and confidence where there was doubt. I trust my creative self, and bringing that out into the world is helping me to find my way forward in my business.

nevada-rbbp

Is there anything you’d like to share about your Right-Brain Business Plan® in terms of what it’s made out of or how you made it?

My Big Vision collage board keeps me focused, and constantly taking steps forward. The center is for my feelings about who I am as an artist/ storyteller and around that are pictures representing themes from my graphic novels and screenplays.

My business self-portrait is on poster board, folded like a book, with a picture of a vintage suitcase on the front to symbolize my journey as a creative entrepreneur and the journey my readers and perfect customers can take when they purchase one of my books or items that contains or tells a story. The cover reads, “The train is leaving the station–are you coming with us?” The interior features images of my characters, words and pictures that evoke emotional elements my stories deal with, and how I’m taking steps to market my work, face challenges, and successfully develop my business.

nevada-rbbp

What’s your big vision for your business?

To tell stories that resonate, entertain and inspire, and to make a positive impact in the world. I will also continue to draw on my years of teaching to help others develop their voices and story-telling skills through a set of workshops designed to foster creativity and provide an effective framework for self-expression. I’ll continue developing my own creative voice and vision, and plan to publish all the graphic novels I’ve represented on my Big Vision collage, and see them made into successful movies!

nevada-rbbp

What advice do you have for other creative entrepreneurs?

Stay true to your creative vision and seek out people who are supportive and encouraging and can offer constructive feedback. Having a network of positive, like-minded folks is helpful when you’re doing the heavy lifting of bringing your creative efforts out into the world.

Also, if you tend to get nervous (like I do sometimes) about putting yourself out there in a big way, realize that probably means you’re stretching your comfort zone, which is a good thing! I find that if I channel that nervousness into enthusiasm for my project, it really helps.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

My second graphic novel, Piano Lessons, a gay teen romance set in the rural south of the 1950’s, will be available soon, and I’ll be adding new sections to my Etsy shop, including book-related art & crafts.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity to share with other right-brainers, and for the opportunity I had to meet with other entrepreneurial and creative women last fall at the Emerging Women Live Conference in Boulder, CO. That’s where I met Jenn and was able to tell her in person how much her book and newsletter have helped me!
Thanks, Jenn!
